Plants Vs Zombies Garden Warfare (PS3) Review.

By Sam Coles:
Plants Vs Zombies Garden Warfare may have graced its presence on the Xbox One and 360 months ago, but now it’s Sony’s turn to have this fun and light hearted game with a surprisingly deep multiplayer and to show us that games don’t have to be serious all the time when it comes down the shooter genre.

Plants Vs Zombies started its life as a small tower defence game on the PC and smart phone/tablets and proved to be very popular with its addicting gameplay and challenge, which made eligible for a sequel and to be ported to games consoles later boosting its status. It was quite the surprise to a see a trailer of it last year at E3 to see it take on a different genre in the form in a third person shooter, the trailer was poking fun at games such as Battlefield and Call of Duty. It showed us that games can have a sense a humour and not just be about gritty drama and games can be for everyone and not just adults (which seems to be the demographic these days), that it’s fun for all the family as well, but that’s an editorial for another time.
The gameplay is a first person shooter but you play as plants and zombies rather than space marines or sassy US marines located somewhere in power armour and you don’t have generic weapons such as pistols, shotguns and SMG’s.

The characters of each class are imaginative and colourful with different details and skills. On the plant side you have the peashooter who is your standard ground soldier who shoots well… peas, the cactus which acts like a sniper class who shoots single shot spines at a distance, Chomper who is a melee based class who likes to get close and personal be eating zombies whole and can avoid attack by burying underground and finally you have the sunflower that acts as the medic and shoots sun rays to heal your team mates.

On the Zombie side of the fence it’s more generic when it comes to character class you have the foot soldier that does exactly says on the tin, the scientist who acts like the medic because can build things such as health stations, the engineer who can build portals which teleport you straight to the action and the All start who reminds of the heavy from Team Fortress 2 if he were an American football player.

When start off each character/class will have one skill, if you play with that class you’ll level up that class and your overall level, which will gain you access to new weapons and skills to up the ante in battles. This could range from the onion drone for the cactus class to the minigun turret mode for the peashooter character. They’re all different and none of them are the same or situational for use. You can unlock new skins for the characters with the stickers you can buy after a match, but these are not only cosmetic changes these new character skins will give a new primary weapon for you to use to change up the flow with that class.

The game is multiplayer only so you’ll be battling with up to 24 players in one match in a competitive circuit and 4-5 in co-op. You have various game modes such as Vanquish which is a standard team deathmatch, Gardens and Graveyards which is a version of Battlefield’s rush mode where you take over or defend a base and the map opens up the more you take over. Vanquish confirmed is a play on Call of Duty’s kill confirmed but instead of collecting dog tags you collect orbs, Suburbination which is a domination type mode and finally Gnome Bomb this is where you have strap a bomb to a gnome and detonate it at different bases similar to Battlefield 4’s obliteration mode.
You also get a co-op mode called “Garden Ops” which takes inspiration from the Gears of War franchise with its horde mode where you have to hold out as long as you can as you face more progressively difficult enemies. It’s nothing special just another horde mode which I grow tired of.
The only Problem I had with this game as I was playing it on the PS3 was sometimes there would some horrendous framerate drops especially when the players are escorting a bomb because there would be too many players in one place slowing the game down. But overall that’s the only problem and it didn’t happen too often.
Plants Vs Zombies Garden Warfare is a fun and light hearted game with a surprisingly deep multiplayer which will keep you entertained for days, so if you don’t own a Microsoft console now is your chance People who own a PS3 and PS4, grab some friends and have some light hearted fun and laugh.

Saints Row "Gat Out of Hell" Expansion Announced.

By Sam Coles:
Saints Row IV gets a standalone expansion pack called “Gat Out of Hell” obviously a play on words of the popular song Bat Out of Hell by Meatloaf. The game sees you take control of series legend Johnny Gat who travels to hell to kick some demon ass and Lucifer himself with a 9mm to the face. You also get to take control of geeky FBI agent Kinzy, which this could mean that, the standard Saints Row customisation will be limited due to the set stock characters.

This Expansion will be coming to Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC and the next gen consoles will be getting a complete edition of Saints Row IV next year, also you don’t need Saints Row IV to play this Expansion.

By Sam Coles:

A new video showing off the cast of The Evil Within where we get a bit of an insight of the characters and the actors who are playing them.

Academy award nominee Jackie Earle Haley is the voice of the main character Sebastian and describes how much it is to do this as well as his love affair with video games comparing working with Shinji Mikami is like working with Scorsese.

Jennifer Carpenter will be playing the role of Sebastian’s junior partner detective and you may know her role within the TV series Dexter as Juli Kidman.

The Evil Within is set to release on the 14th of October 2014 on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS4 and PC. Will you be picking up the Evil Within or not? Let me know in the comments or Tweet @bristoliangamer with the hashtag #Evilwithin.

Amazon Buys Twitch.

By Sam Coles:

The online shopping retailer Amazon have bought the online broadcaster Twitch.tv with the deal of $970 million. It did surface that Google were going to buy Twitch for $1 Billion.

Twitch CEO Emmett Shear stated that “We chose Amazon because they believe in our community, they share our values and long-term vision, and they want to help us get there faster, We’re keeping most everything the same: our office, our employees, our brand, and most importantly our independence. But with Amazon’s support we’ll have the resources to bring you an even better Twitch.”

Followed by a statement from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos “Broadcasting and watching gameplay is a global phenomenon and Twitch has built a platform that brings together tens of millions of people who watch billions of minutes of games each month – from The International, to breaking the world record for Mario, to gaming conferences like E3. And, amazingly, Twitch is only three years old, Like Twitch, we obsess over customers and like to think differently, and we look forward to learning from them and helping them move even faster to build new services for the gaming community.”

Deal will go ahead later this year and then that will be a another video service to Amazon's list, but what do you think? Do you think it's a good idea for Amazon to buy Twitch or no?

Diablo III Ultimate Evil Edition Review.

If you had a massive disappointment with the lacklustre Sacred 3 then maybe you should turn your heads towards to Diablo III, I know it’s been out since 2012, but it finally makes its debut on the Xbox One and PS4 in the form of the Ultimate Evil Edition. This is great opportunity if you missed it on consoles last year and if you are looking for some multiplayer fun to get you through the dry period of gaming.

If you don’t know the story then I don’t know where you’ve been for the last two years. You play as five different classes of heroes that you can choose (I’ll get to that later) and you arrive in New Tristram and find that the town is in a struggle with zombies and demons. You must find Deckard Cain who will tell you about the Prime Evils that you must destroy. It’s you standard fare when it comes to your high fantasy stories and to be honest the story hasn’t changed at all in the space of 15 years.

Gameplay is a top style action RPG in the consoles versions case and it has an addicting just five more minutes style of gameplay and you’ll find out that it’s four in the morning when you stop playing. Just looking around these bleak and hellish landscapes in this game just to see what you can find is great especially with the excellent soundtrack that accompanies these environments coupled with smooth and sharp graphics running at 60fps and a native 1080p. The gameplay is a loot filled experience where you trawl through dungeons killing new and exciting enemies while finding shiny new and weapons and amour to kit out your hero to battle the demons from hell.

It’s always deeply satisfying to find new weapons and armour to see how badass your character can look as well as finding new weapons that will deliver devastating damage to your foes. Along with your weapons and armour you will get a set of skills for your individual character, first off you’ll start off with a simple one button primary attack, but as you push on through the game you will level up and unlock more attacks, skills, runes and passive skills.

Let’s talk about the skills, runes and passive skills, as you level up you’ll have new skills and abilities mapped to different buttons on your controller. This could be a status affect like making your character faster in battle or a devastating area of effect spell or attack. Then you get passive skills which are not mapped to buttons, but act as accolades such as every time you attack an enemy you recover some health or the likely hood of you getting a critical hit. Runes act as an extra boost for your button mapped attacks and abilities for example you can get fire damage with your primary attack or lightning and so forth.

You have five classes to pick from Barbarian who specialises in you guessed it power and destruction who will cut through hordes of demons, Demon Hunter who has a lot of long range attacks that involve bows and crossbows, Witch Doctor who uses black magic to summon creatures such as spiders to do his bidding, Monks who act as a support character by healing your allies, Wizards as you guessed it have control of time and space and the crusader who’s new to the Reaper of Souls add on who’s like a Templar Knight.

If you are feeling lonely and you don’t want to traverse the dark and bleak world of Sanctuary on your own, then you can invite 3 of your friend’s online or local play on the same screen to help you combat difficult enemies and boss fights and to make it more hectic than it already is.

Diablo III Ultimate Evil Edition is a nice all in one package if you missed the first console release of the game last year and with this game you get the Reaper of Souls expansion that was previously only on PC. So if you missed it last year or if you want something new to play on your PS4 and Xbox one, then I would recommend this for the hours of content you’ll get out of it on your own or with friends.

Lego: Ninjagao Nindroids Review.

By Sam Coles:

Lego games and I have never seen eye to eye just because of the fact that they haven’t changed the gameplay of these games since the original Lego: Star Wars game back on the PS2. Also it’s the problem of them becoming very repetitive over time because the gameplay is generally not varied and the combat in a lot of these games are very stiff and slow. Does Lego Ninjago Nindroids solve this problem in some aspects yes, in others no.
The story of this game is after a massive attack, where the town of Ninjago has been destroyed and the citizens are rebuilding Ninjago into the new metropolis of New Ninjago. Then you find out that there is a new enemy on the horizon called the Nindroids and you must use martial arts skills to take them down.

The gameplay is your standard fare when it comes to Lego games you go through each level constructing new contraptions that will get you to the next part of the level, while collecting studs which act as your currency as well as the blue studs if you are a completetionist.
The levels are really short, but I guess that it’s the reason to be on a handheld only, which doesn’t bother me too much because my main problem with Lego games is that the levels go on and on which is coupled with the repetitive gameplay. It’s better in this game because you are playing on a handheld so you are supposed to play it in short bursts for example if you are on the bus that kind of thing.

Instead of playing in a third person perspective like the other games, Ninjago takes an overhead view of gameplay similar to games like Diablo or Torchlight which is a nice touch because you can see everything that is coming at you, but this becomes a pain when it comes down to the platforming puzzles because you can’t judge the height and distance of each platform. It’s a nice change in pace but it does become frustrating when you have to do precise movements.

The combat in most Lego games has always been stiff and a chore to do but it seems to be better and finely tuned but it’s still very awkward and at time you can’t tell if you are hitting an enemy or if the damage has registered.
Overall this isn’t the worst Lego game I’ve played but it’s still marred by the standard Lego game tropes that have not changed since Lego Star Wars back on the PS2, maybe give it go if drops in price if you’re looking for something quick to burn some time on your 3DS or Vita.

By Sam Coles:

World of Warcraft Subscription Fees Increasing in UK in November.

By Sam Coles:
The popular MMORPG from Blizzard will be going up in price for you guys in UK who like to live in the World of Warcraft starting from November 13th in time with the launch of the expansion pack Warlords of Draenor.
This announcement was sighted on the World of Warcraft forums by the community manager discussing the new price plans if you are new comer, and if you still retain an old payment plan you can hold on to it for two years if there are no gaps of course.
The new payment plans are as follow, it will cost £9.99 for 30 days, £28.17 for 90 days, £52.14 for 180 days and £20.99 for the 60 day pre-paid card.
This is a worrying move considering that the WOW subscriber count is dropping day by day and is it relevant to have a monthly payment these days for MMORPGs considering the Free to Play model, who knows? Only the future will tell.

Battlefield Hardline Singleplayer Gameplay.

By Sam Coles:

We finally get a more detailed look of the Battlefield Hardline singleplayer experience that they have been a bit light on the details because it being a Battlefield game its main focus is multiplayer.

The game is being developed by Viseral the same guys who made Dead Space 2 and 3 so we should get a decent singleplayer experience considering it’s being handled by people who notorious for delivering. Let’s face it the narratives in the Battlefield games (except for Bad Company) have never been amazing they’ve always been a walking cliché.

Battlefield Hardline is set to release February 2015 on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Downwarren’ gameplay trailer

By Sam Coles:

CD Projekt Red show off more of their beautiful world within the The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt by showing a short gameplay segment which introduces you to a small village within the No Man’s Land area of the map. We see more of the barbaric and brutal combat as Geralt is slashing through Drowners and you see body parts flying off in a visceral and satisfying fashion.

Each time I see the game it impresses me every time as I’m a huge fan of the games and the books that the games are based on, which I highly recommend that you read if you want to immerse yourself in this world.

The Witcher 3 The Wild Hunt is set to release February 24th 2015 on Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Dragon Age: Inquisition The Enemy of Thedas Trailer.

(Trailer Source: Outside Xbox)

By Sam Coles:

One of my highly anticipated games of 2014 Dragon Age Inquisition gets another trailer showing off the beautiful world of Ferelden reimagined in the Frostbite 3 engine. In this trailer we get more of an insight of the threat that you’ll be facing, which there seems to be a heavy focus about the fade and the Mage and Templar conflict in this game. You also get to see the various horrors that you’ll be fighting from the fade and Dragons less we forget the title of the game.

Dragon Age Inquisition is set to release November 21st on Xbox One. Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - World Setting (Gamescom Dev Diary)

By Sam Coles:

A new video showing more of the huge and diverse world of The Witcher 3 where the developers and writers discuss the different cultures and mythologies that inspired the world that you’ll be traveling come February 25th 2015.
They talk about the origins and legends of how the Witchers become Witchers and the new enemy that has been mentioned in previous games and in the books (if you've read them like me), The Wild Hunt and no one survives it except Geralt of Riva the White Wolf.

Call of Duty Advanced Warfare Multiplayer Reveal Trailer.

By Sam Coles:

Sledgehammer Games have finally thrown down their cards in the form of the multiplayer trailer for Call of Duty Advanced Warfare and its repetitive nature that the series is known for; this game looks as if it has had a violent jump back to life. It evokes that sense of freedom to move where you want and how you get up a building is up to you because you can double jump or use a jetpack, it reminds me of an era of the old multiplayer shooters such as Quake III or Unreal Tournament and not losing its identity as a Call of Duty game.

You can slide about while unloading you assault rifle into the unfortunate enemy that stands in your way, or you can do turn around move which lets go backwards with your jetpack and take your foe out from behind.

I know there are going to be haters out there saying that COD sucks and I understand your fatigue from the series, but play the game before you judge. Call of Duty Advanced Warfare release November 4th on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC.

Mortal Kombat X: Kano Reveal.

Trailer Source: IGN

By Sam Coles:

A new reveal has been unleashed by the folks at Neatherrealm studios with a classic character that you all know and love and has been in the series since its beginnings in 1992. Kano has been revealed like Raiden showing off his various fighting styles that you’ll be able to use to destroy your opponents in the brutal fight to the death.

The first style show off is one that show cases his signature blades that he is known for to deliver devastating blows to his foes. The next lets him use various eye laser and grenade attacks to melt and explode his enemies, or last style lets Kano have an advantage of grapple moves and counter both high and low attacks this is suitable for those who like to get in close and personal.

Mortal Kombat X will be released for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC in 2015 no solid release date yet keep it locked to Bristolian Gamer for news of Mortal Kombat X.

Dead Island 2 Gameplay Trailer.

(Trailer Source: Outside Xbox)

By Sam Coles:

The latest zombie killing action Dead Island 2 gets an actual gameplay trailer rather some pre-render cinematic not showing what the game is. It’s not being developed by Techland this time because they’re focusing on their other project Dyinglight and not another Call of Juarez, which they should.

The game does look more appealing compared to the other games and the gameplay looks smoother and not stiff compared to the first game and Riptide. When I reviewed Dead Island Riptide I didn’t have a good time with it because it tried to mix survival elements with over the top zombie killing action, which didn’t work. This game does look like it can be some pure genocidal fun.

Dead Island 2 is out on Xbox One, PS4 and PC in 2015.

Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition Gets a Release Date.

By Sam Coles:
The fantastic game from 2012 inspired by John Woo Hong Kong thrillers Sleeping dogs is another game that has fallen victim to the dreaded re-release titled “Definitive Edition” like the Tomb Raider game that was released back in January.

The game will be released on PS4, Xbox One and PC with slightly cleared up textures and will run at 1080p (apparently) on the PS4 and Xbox One and will  grace it’s presences that no one asked for in October 2014.

The question I ask is who asked for this game? If you didn’t immediately throw your Xbox 360 or PS3 down a flight of stairs when the new generation came around you can buy the game right now for under £10 second hand. It boggles my mind how the gaming community consistently support these re-releases.

It’s a new generation of consoles I want to play new games and not games that I played and finished two years ago. As I said in my editorial a few weeks ago I have no problems with the concept of remasters like the recently announced Resident Evil 1 remaster for current and last gen machines, the difference with this is that it’s introducing a game to a new generation of gamers not just releasing for the sake of more powerful hardware that is what you save for the sequel. Anyway I hope I see more new games and these waste of time re-releases of games that came out 1-2 years ago.

Assassin's Creed Rogue Goes It Alone.

By Sam Coles:
With the announcement of Assassin’s Creed Rogue for the last gen of consoles it seems that we’ve heard a lot about the gameplay and features of the singleplayer game where you play as an assassin who then turns to the Templar Order.

The reason why we’ve heard nothing about the multiplayer is because there isn’t any multiplayer in this instalment. It’s a breath of fresh air in my opinion, don’t get me wrong the multiplayer from Brotherhood was good it just got tedious and boring after a while and they haven’t changed it since that game. It seems finally that game developers have realised that multiplayer will not always extend a games life with the tacked on modes i.e Tomb Raider. Let’s hope that the singleplayer experience is a substantial one with a rich and lush world with a good story with great gameplay.

Assassin’s Creed Rogue will be released on November 11th on Xbox 360 and PS3.

Mortal Kombat X: Raiden's Fighting Styles

 By Sam Coles:
Another trailer surfaces of Mortal Kombat X going into depth about the latest character reveal of the God of Thunder Raiden. This trailer starts off with Ed Boon Co-creator of the MK series explaining the different styles of fighting for the character. In this game each character has different styles of fighting that you can select on the character select screen before you start the fight, it’s in a similar vein as Street Fighter IV.

The thing I don’t really like about this is you can only change it on the character select screen unlike MK Deadly Alliance to Armageddon you could change the fighting styles in the middle of a fight to keep the flow going. Then again these aren’t different martial arts like in those games they’re different ways Raiden will do special moves and he can only do certain special moves in that variation.

Mortal Kombat X is scheduled for 2015 for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC. Get ready to Finish Him!

Evolve Delayed Till 2015.

By Sam Coles:
The highly anticipated new IP from the guys at Turtle Rock Studios the people who brought us Left 4 Dead have come out to say that their new game Evolve has been delayed. This nothing to do with the development of the game it’s on the publisher’s behalf that the game is being delayed until 2015 after the 2K financial meetings.
The game was scheduled to come out on Xbox One, PS4 and PC in October, but has been delayed until February 10th 2015. It’s seems the month of October is getting quieter and quieter with game releases and February of 2015 is getting very busy unusually. What do you think? Are you happy for a delay so they can iron out the creases or not? Let me know in the comments or Tweet @bristoliangamer with the hashtag #Evolved.

Assassin's Creed Rogue Announcement Trailer.

By Sam Coles:

(Trailer source: CVG)

The last gen Assassin's Creed Ubisoft have been promising us for a while finally gets an announcement trailer showing off the main character who is a Templar Knight. It shows off the character's arsenal that you'll be using throughout the game from muskets to hidden blades to help you dispatch your foes. The game is set to release on Xbox 360 and PS3 on November 11th 2014.

Assassin's Creed:Rogue Leaked Possibly?

By Sam Coles:
Ubisoft throughout 2014 have been stating that they are making two different Assassin’s Creed games this year, one for current gen (Unity) and one for the last gen. The problem is that they have been very quiet about the game for the Xbox 360 and PS3, until now.

According to a link on the Facebook page Access the Animus shows off different screenshots of the game titled “Assassin’s Creed Rogue and is set to release on Xbox 360 and PS3 on November 11th 2014. The story apparently is that you don’t play as an assassin, but instead you play as a character who is part of the Templar order, which is interesting to see the story from the other side.

It’s set in the same period that AC III was set in and sailing will be a big part in the game again. What do you think? Do you think this is fact or fiction? Let me know in the comments or Tweet at me on @bristoliangamer with the #ACRogue.

Resident Evil 1 HD for Last Gen and Current Gen Consoles Coming 2015.

 By Sam Coles:

The fantastic remake from 2002 for the Nintendo Gamecube Resident Evil is getting the HD remaster treatment for the last and current gen consoles. Although in my opinion the original game still holds up now considering the game is 12 years old, but it could use an HD touch up with the consoles of today.

The game has been given a texture update and will run at 1080p on PS4 and Xbox one and will run at 720p on Xbox 360 and PS3, you’ll be able to play it in 16:9 aspect ratio which the original game could not be played in. The weird and ironic thing is that the game is not getting a Wii U release which is strange considering the game was an exclusive Nintendo title.

For more info check out the video where the producers discuss the process of the HD remake and what they’ve added to give it a new lease of live for current gaming. Resident Evil HD is scheduled to come out in 2015 on last and current gen, no solid release window just 2015.

Tropico 5 Banned in Thailand

By Sam Coles:

Strategy game first released on PC and to be released on consoles later this year Tropico 5 has been banned in Thailand by the military  after several months of a military  coup by General Prayuth Chan-ocha. The game has been taken down for sale in Thailand because according to the military it’s causing disruption of “peace and order”.

New era Thailand the publisher in charge of distributing the game in that area of the world stated that they decided to ban it because “it was a threat to national security”.This is not the first time that a game has been banned for being a “threat to national security” China last year banned Battlefield 4 for the same reason although they didn't fully understand the context of the campaign.

Tropico 5 is currently out on PC, but is scheduled for xbox 360 on 5th of September and 31st of October on PS4.
